One of the few non-terrible things about living in 29 Palms, CA was that we lived off the same road as the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park. It was actually a pretty nice place to do some hiking and rock climbing if it wasn’t 120 degrees outside. When there, I felt like I was in the Flinstones. Huge, fake-looking quartz monzonite rocks dot the desert landscape. Supposedly the Bible says the Joshua Tree is native to only two places- the area closest to the gate to heaven and the area closest to the gate to hell. The only other home to the tree is Jerusalem, so you do the math. (I don’t know how accurate this, I’m just passing along the legend…)

I grew up with Joshua trees in my yard. It wasn’t until I was older I figured out they don’t grow EVERYWHERE! 😉

The legend sounds pretty legit to me! 29 Palms is a shit hole. I feel for anyone who is forced to live there and those that choose to live there need to just stay there. Who’s gorgeous dog is that?

Call me crazy, I loved our (almost) year of desert living in 29 Palms. Philip & I had a blast a Joshua Tree, too. Probably one of my favorite memories so far.

I just wanna give a little food for thought. I have lived in 29 for over a year now. But doing the math if I was a highly religious person my way of thinking since these trees also grow in Jerusalem. I would put my all holy city near the gates of hell to ward off anything trying to come out. It would defenitely do its job. I however can think they put the worlds largest active marine base at the gates of heaven to show what might try to danger it what we are all made of!!!!. Both are desert areas so temp has not a thing to do with it.
